Behind the Music with Lakota Silva
The gorgeous SA muso is blowing up on the music scene so we thought we’d share a little insight as to life behind the mic with Lakota Silva, check it out…
The aspiring artist chats to Chia Kougianos about her life growing up, career goals and even gives us a sneak peek at who she will be collaborating with in the future.
Can you tell us a bit about your family and growing up?
I love my family. My parents got divorced when I was 4 and my mum single handily raised myself and my two younger brothers – Christopher and Dominic since then. She is my hero 🙂 I have a half-sister Maxcene and a step sister Maliza. We’re all very close and I’m blessed with incredible aunts and grandparents. We grew up in Cape Town and worked hard to have the best we could with what we had. Things weren’t always easy but God got us through.
Was there ever a stage in your life where you thought you would pursue a career other than in music?
No! (Laughs) I always knew it’d be performance which includes acting and dancing but always music. I’m a little obsessed…
Any South African artists who inspired you along the way?
Yeah! Locnville were inspiring to me along the way. We were (still are) all really good friends so I loved watching them achieve and seeing it was in my reach should I go for it. We’re all on a journey and we have the power to make things happen.
What’s the one thing you’d like to achieve in your career?
Ah I’d love to perform at the Grammys! It’s my ultimate goal!
Do you have advice to aspiring artists out there?
If this is what drives you – what you’d do forever without pay in an unrealistic world – don’t give up. It’s such hard work, but it’ll come.. Slowly but surely and it’ll be worth the hustle and the wait. Make sure you have special people in your life who will build you up and remind you how far you’ve come when you’re in your down days… ‘Only the fearless are great’
Where do you draw your inspiration behind your material?
Literally life – my experiences, my thoughts, my notes, what I like and don’t like… Sometimes it could be a really cool song I’ve heard and I’ll draw inspiration from that too!
How do you manage to balance your time between recording in studio, live gigs and your home life?
Balance is key! Although currently my life is mostly music… Studio, performing, brand building, etc… I believe the hustle in our early days is what really sets the tone for our future. I just make sure my family and friends know I love them and communicate where I’m at so they understand what my intensions are. I do however make sure I make time for connecting, relaxing and family life even in my busy schedule too- as it’s these things which really matter the most.
What kind of sound are you feeling these days?
I’d say quite left field dance tracks. I love a sultry arty vocal on a smooth dance beat – think Lana Del Ray ‘Summertime Sadness’ remix.
