Internationally known and multiple award winner, Dewald Wasserfall shares with Gauteng Lifestyle Magazine the unique opportunity of getting to know the man behind the music.
Dewald Wasserfall was a born musician as he discovered his love and passion for music at an early age. Born in Empangeni, Kwazulu Natal but moved to Alberton, South of Johannesburg, Dewald made it clear to everyone that he had an ambition that couldn’t be matched. His earliest memories contained a toy guitar that traveled everywhere with him making sure that the world knew that this boy was going places.
Dewald’s passion for music and his dream of being in the entertainment business only grew and grew as the years went by. After Varsity, Dewald’s career kicked in as he started playing the pub and open mic scene and soon became a known entertainer.
The musical journey of Dewald Wasserfall is nothing else but extraordinary. His debut album received “Best Newcomer” at both the Ghoema and Tempo awards. The Sophomore album received 4 Ghoema nominations, 3 Tempo nominations as well as the SAMA award for “Best Kontemporêre album”. Career highlights that Dewald shared with us included the Innibos Festival where he performed too well over 40 000 people as well as his Afrikaans is Groot, performances to over 70 000 people. Touring internationally to Namibia, Dubai, England and The Netherlands was also one experience that Dewald named as a highlight of his career.
Afrikaanse Pop Rock with both a catchy melody and intelligent lyrics is what makes Dewald’s music so popular and enjoyable that gives it the potential to cross both Racial and Language barriers. He also writes his songs and selects his repertoire based on the criteria : “Will I still enjoy singing this in 10 years’ time?”
When asked which music artist whether it is local or international do you look up to, Dewald answered right away with John Mayer as his internationally and Elvis Blue being his local. He also made it clear that he has a love for the band, Beatenberg.
The song, ”Jy is die storm” is very motivational and resonates with Dewald’s fans, so when we asked him if he thinks that music has an important role to play when it comes to building the right mindset for facing obstacles in one’s life, Dewald said definitely and that he believes, music connects us emotionally to the world around us, so it has a direct impact on how we face daily life.
As we took a look at all that Dewald has accomplished and the lives his music has touched in such a good way we couldn’t help but to ask him what would he say to someone who is facing the challenge of deciding to chase their dream or to just give up. With 2016 coming to a close, Dewald decided to leave us with some of his plans for 2017. Dewald revealed to us that he is working on a secret musical project with Danny Smoke, a prolific producer, and musician and that Dewald is also planning on starting a travel show.
