Having Fun with sensuality on ‘Tease’
The first lady of comedy Tumi Morake as well as original ‘Cavewoman’ Vanessa Frost, will take audiences on a journey of fun tickling a little more than their funny muscles, in a theatre production titled ‘Tease’.
Following its successful debut at the National Arts Festival in July, its Gauteng premier starts on November 16 till December 4 at the Market Theatre in Newtown, Johannesburg.
Lead cast members Tumi and Vanessa play best friends Neo and Eva who own their suburban hair salon and familiarize the audience on the client-stylist relations.
These relations embroil a veritable stream of conversations as well as agony aunt-style advice.
In an unexpected professional and personal switch, Neo and Eva embark on a journey of self-discovery.
Using their intimate knowledge of client’s needs and a mature understanding of what women and men want, best friends decide to run a backroom business that sells adult toys, discreetly.
Although the show is produced by Bloom & Stone, known for creating meaningful and accessible content, Vanessa explained that this production is not just for gags.
“The extensive research that went into the script lead to the discovery of heartfelt things,” she said. Vanessa added that, “the production has a potent message that encourages women to take back their personal pleasure”. Despite Tumi being a sought-after comedian, she described Tease as a return to her first love, which is theatre performance.
“It has come at a time when the spotlight is on women specifically around gender equality and body shaming,” said Tumi.
She continued to share that whilst sex and shame go hand in hand, Tease is trying to eradicate that stigma. “We are trying to remove the concept of shame from sex, sex is not just about anatomy, and it’s not just about naughtiness but about people. Described by many as ‘Lots of fun with more than fringe appeal’, Tease has earned a Standard Bank Ovation Award that recognises productions that expresses artistic innovation and excellence.
