Sphamandla Qiniso Ngcobo : A Star On The Rise
Sphamandla Qiniso Ngcobo is a 25 year young ambitious and passionate artist, his an actor and director on a South African soapie titled Scandal which broadcasts on ETV weekdays at 19:30.
He grew up in a small town, Pietermaritzburg in Kwazulu Natal and at the age of 16 “I knew exactly what I wanted to become since then my focus has shifted towards entertainment, I have always wanted to make television for a living” he says.
He came to Joburg in 2012, “I dropped out of UKZN after my second year because at the time I felt the direction i was taking was not the route I wanted to go, I came to Joburg to chase my dreams of making television” says the talented actor. After struggling in Joburg for some time, squatting at a friend’s place and searching for agencies to take him under. He eventually found an agent and even then the struggle continued because of how unprofessional “my first agent was, I soldiered on and then got the scandal audition” says SphamandlaHe was sent to audition for a character that did not fit his description at all, “I was shattered when they told me I was too young to play the part, but the casting director at the time thought I had “That thing” lol so she put me on camera and kept my audition tape, a few weeks later I got a call and Hloni was born”.
Hloni is a character he portrays on Scandal. Ngcobo describe Hloni as a very nosey person (Uthanda izindaba zabanatu uHloni) lol but then again he is playing a barman and usually that’s always the case, Sphamandla is a very outgoing person who’s not afraid to speak out, I would like to think I am humble and also keep things to myself. He got into TV while he was doing his last year at varsity , he had to find something to do in Joburg whilst he was in and out of auditions, so he enrolled to do a directing course, “I was studying before i got the role of playing Hloni,” he explains.
“Honestly I don’t see myself doing anything besides entertainment, so if it was not acting it would be anything else that has to do with entertainment, shows, producing and Writing our industry is very diverse,” says the Scandal Actor. He thinks the entertainment industry is not for the faint hearted, but if you love it then you’re able to deal with the punches.
Qiniso says “My fashion sense defines me, I wear what I feel comfortable in and I don’t compromise when it comes to the things I like to wear, I don’t follow trends, I like what I like,” I look up to few people in the industry, I’m lucky enough to work with some of the people I grew up watching on TV back home. Pioneers who started this, the likes of Jerry Mofokeng, Hlomla Dandala and Sanele Zulu (Who is currently one of the best directors I know).I don’t consider myself a celebrity, but the industry has taught me to be disciplined. A lot can go wrong so easily, discipline is vital. Stay focused and put in the hours!!! I’m focused right now but I wish I had taken things seriously a bit sooner. God first and foremost and my parents, their support has been nothing but amazing.
We asked Sphamandla about future plans “Right now I am working on new project I can’t really go into details because we start shooting next week. I’m super excited about that, I am also still at Scandal as an actor and I recently started my directing mentorship under the guidance of Sanele Zulu,” says the star on the rise.
