Tambuti Lodge, Pilanesberg : South Africa.
What was the room like?
The lodge has five rooms, aptly named after the famous big 5. Ours was the Hippo suite, which was a beautifully furnished twin bed room with a private deck, featuring sun loungers and an outdoor shower. There was even a discreet view of the lodge’s plunge pool from the room. The room itself boasted extremely comfortable beds and an open-plan bathroom which had a giant shower, bath and separate toilet. The suite was clean, comfortable and instantly made us feel as though this was a high quality hotel. We walked in to discover a bottle of bubbles, and every evening we found little sweet treats on our pillows.
What were the staff like?
Upon arrival at Tambuti Lodge it was immediately obvious that this was not your average safari lodge. First of all, we received a phone call en route, just to check that we were alright. Then, when we arrived we had a welcome party waiting outside for us. Staying at Tambuti was just like staying at a friend’s house for the weekend. Everyone was incredibly welcoming and relaxed, and they constantly reminded us to help ourselves from the bar – we didn’t need to wait to be served. We got the impression that absolutely nothing was a problem, and they would do their best to cater for even the most difficult of guests.
And the food?
This was a real high point of our stay. The resident chef, Lashley, was not only absolutely charming, but she also really knew what she was doing in the kitchen. Whether it was pork belly or ostrich fillet, she cooked it to perfection with some delicious seasonal vegetables on the side. During my stay, there were a couple of vegetarians and vegans, which might have been tricky to cater for. But not for Tambuti’s chef; she was able to whip up different options with ease, making sure not to skimp on the flavour either.
What were the game drives like?
Every morning at 5.45am we got a phone call from the ranger, but there was enough time for a quick coffee and a snack before setting off for the first drive of the day. Tambuti Lodge is situated in the Black Rhino Reserve – a private reserve which is incorporated in the Pilanesberg National Park, and is home to all of the famous big 5. Our ranger, Anthony, was incredibly knowledgable with a tangible and infectious passion for the bush. We learnt an unbelievable amount from him, and thoroughly enjoyed his cheerful company on the drives.
Would you recommend this place to friends and family?
Absolutely. Tambuti is a really special lodge, that offers guests something other hotels wouldn’t be able to. As there are so few rooms, the lodge feels like your own private haven in the middle of the bush. Guests all know each other by the end, and will be on first name terms with the staff too. For an intimate safari experience with touch of luxury, I’d certainly recommend Tambuti, without hesitation.
