The return of Winnie Khumalo
Listen to Lazaru only at GLmag
Call it perfect timing or simply long overdue. Singer Winnie Khumalo was introduced to many in 2008, when timeless hit ‘Live my life’ broke out. As an independent artist, no longer under Kalawa Records, Winnie is back. The reception of her new single Lazaru, as seen as on social media attests to her loyal fan base.
On twitter some have declared Lazaru as the perfect festive season tune.
The single which was produced by Bongo Beat, features Kalawa’s Busiswa as well as Zimbabwean musician Linonel.
The Shona lyrics, tell the story of a married couple facing financial challenges. Winnie explained further saying, “the couple’s financial state results in tension among them. The wife complains tirelessly to her husband about money. Then one day, he responded to her saying, I do not have any money I am like Lazaru.” (A male character from the bible that was met with many challenges)
“In the end, the couple agrees to stand by each other and face the difficult times together”, she said.
During her absence, Winnie shared that she had to overcome many challenges. “I decided to leave my label and stand on my own which has not been easy. Coming out as an independent artist has required a lot of money, a good team and so much more. I am happy that I can now be my own boss.” She added that, “when you belong to a label, it’s more like you are tamed; now I can express myself without anybody telling me how to be me. My fans will now understand the real me”.
Winnie is confident about her return, and even announced that 2013 Idols finalists and daughter Rethabile Khumalo will also be making her way to the music scene.
With a number of gigs already lined up, Winnie assured that a video for Lazaru will be hitting the big screens soon.
