5 DAYS TO GO: Cell C Inanda Africa Cup
The Cell C Inanda Africa Cup, will make its much-anticipated return on 16 June 2019, set to take place at the picturesque equestrian venue in the heart of Sandton, the Inanda Club.
Touted as one of the best polo tournaments in Africa, the unique knock-out tournament headlined by Cell C is set to bring together all the prestige that is associated with the ‘Sport of Kings’. The afternoon fete will be complete with thrilling polo matches, fashion, African artistry and an exhilarating horse vs machine race showcased by the official vehicle sponsor BMW Sandton; a display of horsepower & speed all anticipated over a glass of fine champagne set against the backdrop of the game.
Following on its tradition, this year the tournament will display exceptional horsemanship with teams from Angola, Ghana, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe in a clash for the coveted trophy.
The Titan Law Team will sport a fully authentic Zimbabwean Polo Team led by Smart Kuusawa (2), and joined by Gareth Meikle (3), Nathan Stockil (1) and Maison Lombard (0), a team eager to snatch victory as the champions at the Cell C Inanda Africa Cup.
Cell C Zambia, sponsored by Diego Casilli (1), the Club Chairman of the Lusaka Polo and highly recognized business mogul. The players are Shaun Davy (0) and brothers, Brent (1) and Eric Stubbs (4) who will pit against the 2019 Africa Cup Title.
This year’s stellar player line up will also see the return of Ghana Polistas from the family of ardent polo fanatics, the Awuah-Darko’s. Harold Awuah-Darko Jnr (0), Nana Awuah-Darko Ampem II (0) will team up with seasoned player Brad Mac Gibbon (4) and development polo star Zompie Tsotetsi (2).
First time participants in the Cell C Inanda Africa Cup is Angola, sponsored by Mangais Polo Club, a newly-born project in Angola and Eduardo Vieira, the club’s president. “We are the first polo club in Angola and we have the hope that it will become a point of contact among horse enthusiasts, sports fans and nature lovers”, explains Eduardo Vieira. The team will boast professional players; Ryan Roberston (2), Alex Watson (1), International polo player Nico Van Wyk (3), captained by Eduardo Araujo Viera (-1).
The South African teams on the day will include Team Fulvic with Phillip Meyer (-1), Adrian Lavarinhas (0), Steven Stewart (3) and Johan Du Preez (5), the 2018 Cell C Inanda Africa Cup Most Valued Player (MVP).
Team Heineken, is sponsored by Juaan Ferreira (-1), entrepreneur and managing director of Sonic State Experiential. This side will boast seasoned players, Murray Spark (3) and Terrence Spilsburry (3), complete with the Most Valued Player (MVP) crowded at the Aon Inanda International Polo Development Curtain Raiser, Donou Lithula (2). Donou’s handicap was recently lifted due to his brilliant performance over the last season.
The Kego Mining team sponsored by Owen Nelson (0), joined by Matt Thake (2) and Duncan Ellis (4). The team will pride itself with the only leading female polo player in this year’s tournament, Lee-Anne Spark (0).
The Team Blue Label, captained by Inanda Club Polo Manager, Craig James (3) will include skilled players Crispin Cheadle (3), Matt De Gersigny (2) and rising star Zack Levy, (-1) who is the youngest player in the tournament.
The 2019 event theme, #ARTANDAFRICANSPIRIT, will showcase the vibrancy of Africa, taking inspiration from iconic fashion designers and crafters who will unleash a riot of colour, texture and bold ethnic patterns. Exclusive installations by fashion houses and designers Thula Sindi, African Style Story, Sober, Klipa, Ephymol, Thebe Magugu, Nao Serati, Sindiso Khumalo, Muso Maxwell, Floyd Ave, De Mil, Clive Rundle, Sies! Isabelle and XV By Ntando will all be complemented by craft exhibitions and pop-up stalls from some of Mzansi’s best lifestyle brands.
The host for the day Lunga Shabalala, considered to be one of the industry’s most handsome television presenters, will crown the ‘Best Dressed Female’, ‘Best Dressed Male’, ‘Best Dressed Couple’ and ‘Best Dressed to the Theme On The Day’ awards.
An array of VIP’s, entrepreneurs and A-List celebrities, such as television personality Thembi Seete, radio host Thando Thabethe, Actress Khanya Mkangisa and Thapelo Mokoena will mingle with punters and business elite and will have the opportunity to network in a relaxed environment with the likes of media mogul Basetsana Kumalo, business women Johanna Mukoki and entrepreneur Lebo Gunguluza.
