KALAWA JAZMEE CELEBRATES 25 YEARS OF DEFINING CULTURE
The iconic label announces celebrations across small screens and stages
Johannesburg, South Africa, 28 June 2019: To commemorate 25 years of its existence, Kalawa Jazmee Records announced a line-up of unique projects. At a star-studded event held at
Universal Music Group Africa (UMGA) in Johannesburg, the directors of the independent record label unveiled plans for seven special celebrations.
It was revealed that the company will release Kalawa Jazmee’s 25 Years Celebration album – a body of work that offers remakes and remixes to some of the biggest hits that have come out
of the label in the last 25 years. Kalawa Jazmee’s 25 Years Celebration already features the talents of Riky Rick, Mpumi and Kid X to name a few.
There is also an opportunity for up and coming producers and musicians to feature on Kalawa Jazmee’s 25 Years Celebration. They can simply submit samples of their remixes or
remakes to firstname.lastname@example.org for consideration.
This pillar is particularly close to the hearts of the directors of Kalawa Jazmee: Oscar “Oskido” Mdlongwa, Mandla “Spikiri” Mofokeng, Zynne “Mahoota” Sibika,
Emmanuel “Mjokes” Matsane and Bruce “Dope” Sebitlo.
The label will cap off 2019 with the Tribute to Kalawa Jazmee Live Festival. The festival, which is in partnership with ULive Africa, will stage performances by 25 artists
who are part of Kalawa Jazmee’s legacy. It will be filmed for an hour-long TV special that will be broadcast in 2020.
Tribute to Kalawa Jazmee Live Festival will include activations for budding musos to continue to submit samples for Kalawa Jazmee’s 25 Years Celebration album.
Another celebration comes in the form of the Kalawa Jazmee stable headlining the 2019 DStv Delicious International Food and Music Festival. This two-hour set will also
aptly include 25 acts on stage.
“We’ve been rocking dance floors both underground and commercially in the last 25 years, like no one else,” commented Oskido. “This is a celebration of that joy and pain.”
Additionally, a television drama series called The Story of Kalawa Jazmee, will chronicle the rise and rise of a record label that has defined urban culture for over two decades.
Kalawa Jazmee has, presently or at some point, been home to everyone from Boom Shaka to Busiswa. From Mafikizolo to Maphorisa. From Trompies to Thebe, and more.
The Story of Kalawa Jazmee is slated to air in 2020. It is produced by the multi-award-winning production house, Puo Pha, and will open up the industry by casting fresh faces.
These upcoming actors will be found through a talent search competition which will culminate in a reality TV show. Nationwide auditions for the reality show will take place in September 2019.
Renowned filmmaker, Vincent Moloi, is the creative director for Kalawa Jazmee’s 25th anniversary celebrations. He said: “Kalawa Jazmee is not just an iconic institution of youth music
culture – these geniuses gave us an intimate soundtrack to our experience of South Africa in the last 25 years. These celebrations reflect that.”
The celebrations continue as a musical based on the trials and triumphs of Kalawa Jazmee will have an eight week run at the Market Theatre in Johannesburg in April 2020.
It’s directed by the acclaimed James Ngcobo and choreographed by the lauded Gregory Maqoma.
The musical will be co-produced by The Market Theatre, Kalawa Jazmee and Puo Pha Productions. It will be co-written with author, Niq Mhlongo. The cast will include established
thespians and unknown actors who were discovered in the aforementioned talent search.
This 25th Annivessary Celebration is a partnership with Net#work BBDO, which will see the award-winning agency provide strategic and creative services as well as work with the rest
of the team to create commercial brand partnership opportunities.
Traditionally, a present of silver is offered on the occasion of the 25th anniversary. But this year, Kalawa Jazmee gives their supporters the gift of playing a part in continuing the
company’s legacy by celebrating with them.
