Matt Ross: SA Top Model .
Matt Ross his an International Male Model, Youtuber, Podcaster & Social Media Influencer. His passionate about traveling love fashion, respect hustle enormously he says his obsessed with where people are focusing their attention.
The Model told us he didn’t have the fairytale beginning which is commonly told in the Modeling Industry. “I wasn’t scouted at a mall or found at a festival by an agency.
In Grade 11 (after the suggestion of friends and family) I decided to become a Model, walked into TOPCO Model Management (my mother agency) & signed with them on their PEOPLE Board (Not for actual models, more for personalities.)” Says the Social Media Influencer. He also add that he always loved being under the public eye, wanted to travel & thought this would be an opportunity for him.
Then After 4 years of dieting, training & shooting pro-bono, he moved to his Mother Agency’s Mainboard (their TOP International Models) in the beginning of 2016.
A month later he landed his first international modelling contract with TFM in Mumbai, India & proceeded to work there for 6 months with Top International Brands. “So it wasn’t luck or anything airy fairy, it was a decision & then hard work. He Says.
Matt told us Like many youngsters he aspired to be like characters he saw on television series & movies. Sheldon from Big Bang Theory, Dr Dorian from Scrubs, Harvey Specter from suits, Don Corleone from The Godfather, all powerful & competitive characters.
They all strove to be the best in their industry & being competitive by nature he related to them highly. “Being competitive teaches you to know your worth, your strengths & where to focus which is very helpful in the modeling industry because it builds self-confidence in an extremely critical industry. You learn to not take any of the rejection personally, focus on your wins & build yourself as a brand/name instead of hopefully for a miracle/big break. Says the Youtuber.
We asked Matt what did his parents first think of him being a model? And Told us
“As it wasn’t a rapid change, e.g. Getting scouted, signing & then being whisked off to Paris so there was no real need to quickly come to terms with it. It was not an overnight experience & therefore I don’t think they saw it any differently to any of the other projects I was working on at the time. Regardless I am very fortunate to have 2 supportive parents & never received any resistance from them when going for my goals.”
Matt also told us From the actual work side he don’t think that modeling is a very pressurised/stressful industry. A completely different situation for Fashion Designers, Brand Managers etc. As long as you (as a model) realise that you are hired to be a cog in a much larger machine & respect those around you the process is extremely pleasant, fun & rewarding! In terms of pressure from society it comes down to eating reality.
“What I mean by that is knowing that there is someone better looking than you.
Knowing that there is someone with more followers. Knowing that someone has been signed to more agencies, who has booked more work & travelled more.” He Says
Realising that there is NOTHING you can do to change that & every second you spend on wondering, wishing & hoping is time wasted. It’s about focusing on improving yourself, caring about your audience & producing the best quality work you can. Period.
Matt said From a qualified/trained standpoint, no.he did train for 6 years at the College of Magic, in Cape Town, “This gave me enormous self-confidence & the ability to present myself which is extremely helpful on & off camera. I have proceeded to shoot Video Editorials & Commercials for Online Magazines & Brands. No “serious” acting though.” Says the Model.
He went on and told GLM “I am obsessed with where people focus their attention.
I find the shift to online extremely exciting & as a result spend approximately 10 hours per day, 7 days a week online. Producing daily content for my Youtube Channel (through a series called 24/7/365 which documents the life of an International Model.) Podcasts on Soundcloud. Visual Content for Facebook, Instagram & Twitter. As well as written content on my travels which go live on my Website.I value my audience deeply & strive to produce content across all platform types (audio, picture, written & video) so as to cater for their preference”.
His Future plans definitely include get back on stage! His also passionate about helping the youth (the 16 – 25 year old demographic) with personal branding, using social media to develop a business, travel, content creation etc. “Am doing everything within my power to speak at youth events, seminars etc on these topics. Ambitious as this sounds I would like to become the most influential Male Model in the world & I intend to achieve that through enormous amounts of hustle.” He Says
