Meet the 72-year-old athlete, Mbande Diliza.
It is not often that you see an elderly person participating in endurance athletic activities but Mbande Diliza is different. The 72 year–old from Port Elizabeth took part in the recent Telkom 947 Cycle Challenge 2017 and finished the 94.7 km race.
Diliza currently resides in Melrose where he works, he has entered and participated in this annual cycle race for five years in a row and he says:” I am 72 years, and I am not sick, I just like keeping fit. I train five days a week, every morning I wake up and jog or ride my bicycle before going to work.”
Diliza finished with a Bronze medal at this year’s Comrades marathon and he is not planning to stop taking part any time soon. He says when he is cycling or running he feels free and happy. “I just enjoy being on the road, apart from keeping fit, it is also for other health reasons.”
The father of two says if he is not at work or training he listens to the radio to relax. “I love listening to the radio, that is where I get to listen to the news and music. I do not have a Television where I am staying, but even when I am home in PE I don’t watch it. I love radio.
