Celebrity makeup artist Vuyo Varoy speaks to us
The common story of how a hobby becomes a steady source of income is no match to that of celebrity make-up artist Vuyo Varoy. His clientele is everybody who is anybody. The likes of television personality Bonang Matheba, country’s first lady miss Thobeka Zuma, international songstress Tiwa Savage, internationally recognized actress Terry Pheto as well as American reality television star Phaedra Parks, are among the few who have trusted his skills with their image. Born and raised in Cape Town, after Vuyo completed a fashion qualification he relocated to Joburg which landed him an entry into the workplace. “I the beginning I worked as an intern for a production company and they had a make-up division which all the models would use. Every chance I got I would sneak over there as it was not my line of duty, and somehow feel in love with applying make-up,” he said. Shortly after the internship ended, Vuyo joined MAC cosmetics in 2007, for a period of 2 years. 6 months into that appointment, he was trusted to represent the product at SA Fashion Week, which opened doors for Vuyo. “Because I knew I had discovered my talent, I got an opportunity to travel abroad with MAC, where my skills only got better,” said Vuyo. When Revlon announced their collaboration with personality Bonang Matheba, Vuyo’s stardom also flourished. In 2013 he signed the deal to be Matheba’s make-up artist for all Revlon campaign, appearances, including the famous ‘Bonang with Revlon’ billboard, available nationwide. “From the 2 year agreement with Revlon honestly my clientele began to grow. I am able to sustain a living now just as a freelance artist.” he said. 2017 for Vuyo is step closer to bigger achievement. “I have a professional website in progress which I will use to blog and interact with people about make-up, as well as possibilities of my signature cosmetics line, not to jinx anything of course,” he giggled. Speaking on how his craft is received he mentioned that, “there is so much more to this job than to just do make-up. I am hoping that as many other make-up artists’ surface, more recognition like awards and regulation policies, will be given to us for our work,” he said.
4 easy to follow make –up tips, for the year ahead, by Vuyo Varoy
- Skin Foundation needs to blend with your skin – This I emphasize, when shopping for foundation ask any available assistant to use a tester under a natural light, so you can get the correct blend for your skin.
- Natural eyebrows over constructed eyebrows – The trend of shaving off your brows then drawing them instead is a total no, no. It is destructive and not appealing.
- Always have a bronzer with you – A bronzer is a life saver, it glams your make up and keeps your skin fresh and glowing. It can be used as an eyeshadow, blush as well as to correct your foundation.
- The matt look, works well enough for television – Television stars always have to have their skin matt because of the lights on set, apart from that, matt has to go. Glowing skin looks natural and beautiful.
