Soweto Fashion Week A/W 19, Inspired By The Mother Of Our Nation!
We are exceptionally excited to announce the next Soweto Fashion Week, the first of two for 2018, taking place from May 30th – June 2nd at the Walter Sisulu Hall in Kliptown, Soweto. Firstly Kicking off with a prelaunch party of the 30th of May 2018 at the Soweto hotel.
This year’s Autumn Season SFW A/W 19 is particularly special! We are honouring the Mother of our Nation, the legendary Winnie Madikizela Mandela. As always, SFW is focused on promoting authentic Africa within cutting- edge clothing and accessory designs, but in this SFW event, the original designs to be shown are specifically inspired by Winnie Mandela’s own personal fashion style and preferences – in every aspect from colour pallets to clothing and accessory styles.
Winnie Mandela inspired South African women to believe in themselves and in their heritage, and to wear traditional African clothes with pride, her political role becoming augmented by her role as a fashion icon. She was especially fond of the ‘Mpondo’ look, as it kept her connected to her roots and her ancestors, grounding her in tradition as she fought for change in the ‘foreign’ landscape of Westernisation. For Winnie Mandela, fashion and style was about far more than clothing, hats and accessories, and it is this as much as her fashion sense that we are celebrating.
In addition, SFW’s long-term partner and principal Sponsor, Darling Hair, has adopted a Black Panther-inspired theme for SFW A/W19, and will be adapting it through innovative hairstyles and colour pallets. Africa at her most inspirational!
We are also again showcasing the designs of two exceptionally talented young Designers who really made a splash during the 2017 Season. Mercia Ramagaga and The Klossete were featured in SFW in 2017 and their designs subsequently incorporated into Young Designer Emporium Stores nationwide.
Their 2018 Autumn designs will be on show along with those of 24 other enigmatic, energetic, talented and inspired designers, whose work will be showcases by a total of 75 models – including 30 male models, 30 ‘petite female’ models and 15 ‘plus size’ models.
“To encourage inclusion and accessibility – so important to Winnie Mandela – and to make it possible for even more of Africa’s daughters and sons of all ages to enjoy SFW A/W 19, we have lowered our ticket prices by almost 50% from the 2017 price to R95 per day, with a special offer of R50 per day for pensioners and children under the age of 12 says” Stephen Manzini Director of SFW
Many of our partners are back onboard in 2018, and this year’s sponsors include Darling Hair, Gauteng Tourism, ETV, Soweto TV, YDE including others .
Soweto Fashion Week A/W19 is an event not to be missed and promises to take SFWs commitment to promoting home-grown fashion design and the wealth of upcoming and established local talent to a whole new level. We have never been prouder, never more united, and never more inspired to take our creativity and endeavour in fashion-design to centre-stage!
