The 3rd King Of Maskandi After Ichalaha.
Jaiva Zimnike, the best performer, guitarist whose work dates back more than a decade, continues to draw fans and make interesting recordings. Since the days of the late Mnqgumeni, he has been working on his craft as a dancer and performer. If you can’t recall this guy then you are not par with the state of Maskandi.
GLM: Introduce us to Jaiva
Jaiva: Mzovukile Khanyeza known as Jaiva Zimnike was born on 5th September, 1986. He is a Maskandi singer, guitarist, dancer and songwriter. In 2001, Jaiva began appearing as a dancer on Mgqumeni’s music videos, where he remained a regular until he decided to pursue a singing career in 2003 with a group called OSAZIWAYO. He is an overachiever who puts his all in whatever he does and that has granted him the title of being ’THISHA WENTAMBO’. Those who know Jaiva will attest that his love for guitar, stage performance and music immense. Java’s energy at stage can be contagious when he performs you are bound to dance along. My stage name Jaiva Zimnike came because of my creative abilities since I was a boy.
GLM: Tell us about your trip to Russia
Jaiva: I am particularly grateful for the opportunity I got through Abafana Baka Mgqumeni. Before Mgqumeni could pass on we were working together as a team, even now I can boldly say we wouldn’t have gotten where we are it wasn’t for his influence. Russians accepted us with love and they enjoyed our music althorn language was a barrier. South Africans only appreciate our artists more once they have “made it” overseas that needs to stop. I have performed in front many people. And it was one of the best feelings ever that I really can’t describe. It feels incredible, for lack of a better word. You really come alive in that moment. Here at home I have performed on big stage such as Amatshotsho awards and I won an award as well. I performed in ICC, Khuphuka Nezakho,Imvunge, and Danhauser Festival.
GLM: Describe your sound and how many albums do you have as a solo artist?
Jaiva: My sound is typical, traditional maskandi. Since I left Osaziwayo, I have released 3 Albums under my name, 2015 Imiyalo Yami ,2016 Inkosi Yomaskandi, 2017 Isikole Sengoma. Last year I managed to produce AMA-AK47 album, titled Just Relaxed, under Othisha Bengoma Music, recorded at Takk studios, Engineered by Thuthani Ndlovu and mixed by Jan Smith.
GLM: You collaborated with Mroza and his song became the song of the year how did you feel? And what are other Collaborations you have done?
Jaiva: I was very much excited but not surprised because I know what I am doing. Every young maskandi artist I have worked with prospers, Mthandeni Manqele popularly known as Igcokama is my student in music to name few. I can proudly say I am the first Maskandi artist to feature a Germany artist. I have worked with Carren Carden a white Germany artist, prominent Jazz singer Ringo Madlingozi, the late Mjikijelwa, Shwi no Mtekhala, Ngiga and many more.I am currently cooking something with Danger of Big Nuz, It’s going to be out before the end of this year. it is going to be available on all online stores and I am going to visit all branches myself and sell my album.
GLM: I heard that you are the third King of Maskandi, tell us about that?
Jaiva: As with most of the other cultures in the world, Maskandi music has it’s own culture and practices. The Kingship culture in maskandi is built on individuals’s artistic abilities. Mngqumeni was the King of Maskandi and he left the throne for Mjikijelwa Ngubane, Now that Mjikijelwa is no more you can ask anyone who is truthful I am in rightful person to take the Crown.
