Tumeric : The Miracle Spice
Scientists have finally confirmed what Indians have been saying for years; Tumeric is one of the most powerful nutritional supplements known to man.
Proven to be a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant due to the presence of a compound called Curcumin, the widely used food spice can be purchased at any local supermarket. Besides matching the effectiveness of some anti-inflammatory drugs (without the side effects) and boosting the activation of your body’s own antioxidant enzymes, Curcumin has also been proven to increase brain function, stop migraines, lower the risk of heart disease, help prevent Cancer, lessen the effects of Arthritis and Alzheimer’s, and may even work as an anti-depressant.
There is a catch though – Curcumin found in food is not enough to influence the body, which also does not absorb the compound easily.
The most effective method to follow is by consuming 4-5 teaspoons of Tumeric with Black Pepper which contains Piperine that will enhance the absorption of Curcumin by 2000%. Remember that Tumeric should always be consumed on an empty stomach and should be avoided by pregnant women. Do not forget to consult your doctor before consuming any new medication whether natural or pharmaceutical.
It should come as no surprise by now that there are many other every day uses for Tumeric Powder. The ‘wonder spice’ (when mixed with warm water to create a paste) can be applied as a face mask to clear out acne and pimples, treat irritating insect bites, and even stop the bleeding of open wounds. I cannot help but wonder how many other uses there might be for this widely used spice.
