Unyaw’Olusha Gives Maskandi Fans New Flavour.
The Mhlongo Brothers are bringing a new flavour to the music scene. Brothers Siboniso and Lungelo Mhlongo have released their second album after the success of their debut Inselelo, released four years ago. They said they were inspired by their family and friends, If it weren’t for their support, they doubt they would have pursued music.
GLM: Unyaw’owulusha consists of…?
Unyaw’olusha: Siboniso “mayakayaka” Mhlongo a lead vocalist and Lungelo “Sdikadika” Mhlongo backing vocalist.
GLM: What was the purpose behind the name Unyaw’olusha?
Unyaw’olusha: We are bringing a different sound, a different style, a different rhythm within Maskandi genre.
GLM: When did you guys meet and how long have you been together?
Unyaw’olusha: We are siblings,and we have been singing together since we were young.
GLM: Why did you choose Maskandi?
Unyaw’Olusha: Maskandi chose us, growing up In Nkandla where Maskandi music originated we do not think that we had any other choice but to embrace and grow our African legacy.
GLM: What are your songs about?
Unyaw’Olusha: Generally social issues that we face daily in our society and dynamics of love relationships.
GLM: Who are your musical influences?
Unyaw’olusha: Shwi noMtwekhala,Mngqumeni,Mtshengiseni just to name few.
GLM: Are you signed with any company?
Unyaw’olusha: We are not under any company but we are looking forward to such opportunities. We were fortunate enough to be record our current album at TAKK studios. Currently we are using social media platforms to market our music.
GLM: What has been the biggest challenge for you?
Unyaw’olusha: People love our music and our biggest challenge so far has been moving between promotions and events which becomes a daunting task without funding. Sometimes we are forced to pull out. From recording, printing and distributing our music has been difficult because of the demand and we can’t manage to reach other places.
GLM: Other than music what are you guys doing?
Unyaw’olusha: Siboniso is in transport business and Lungelo is a trainee artisan.
