Why Every Girl Deserves A Traditional Wedding.
(Shadrack & Lebogang Sepenyane)
Drums, singing, the sound of high pitched voices of women ululating out of excitement and enough outfits to make you excited. Here are a few reason why every girl deserves a traditional South African wedding.
- UNION OF THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY
Unlike the normal white weddings , traditional weddings not only bring you, your immediate family and friends together, they bring the entire community together. Invitation cards aren’t necessary because everyone will come to celebrate your happy day. Seeing people, even strangers, coming to celebrate your wedding goes a long way in fostering feelings of Ubuntu.
A girl can never have too many outfits and traditional weddings encourage a fashion extravaganza. Throughout the celebrations, the bride wears different outfits that signify different meanings. The first outfit is to welcome you as the makoti (bride), the second outfit is to say that you’re officially a wife now and the third outfit will be in line with your new hubby’s culture. That’s at least three outfits to strut in.
With the women of the community coming to gather at home, you won’t have to pay money to a catering company, they prepare meals and traditional beer. Nobody can master traditional African food like African women do.
Gifts are exchanged between the two families to symbolise union. The bride and the groom also receive gifts from friends, immediate and extended family and the whole community so that when they move in together, their needs will be covered.
