WRESTLEMANIA® 35 SET TO THRILL
The 2019 edition of the grandest WWE event of them all, WrestleMania, is here. WrestleMania is the event every WWE Superstar dreams of headlining and which carries timeless memories for WWE fanatics the world over.
Since its inception in 1984 the showpiece has become one of the most recognizable sports entertainment events on earth. On 7 April 2019, the world will stand up for the event’s 35th edition and witness history in its first-ever women’s main event.
WrestleMania was originally conceptualized by WWE Chairman and CEO, Vince McMahon, and has over the years produced some of the best entertainment on offer.
In the ring, WWE’s greatest have all participated including the likes of Brett Hart, Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Undertaker and John Cena.
Cena has had his fair share of intense Wrestlemania bouts which included a “Once in a Lifetime” match against the electrifying Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in 2012. The Undertaker however holds claim to arguably the greatest WrestleMania feat of all – a streak of 21 straight unbeaten years. The streak began in 1991 when he defeated Jimmy Snuka, the likes of Triple H, Kane and Shawn Michaels followed with his last win coming over CM Punk at WrestleMania 29. It was widely considered that the streak would never be broken but 2014 at WrestleMania 30, Brock Lesnar stunned the world to end the phenomenal run, with The Undertaker going on to lose once more against Roman Reigns in 2017.
Reigns will be in action again this year after triumphing in his battle with leukemia. He is set to take on Drew McIntyre in a grudge match after McIntyre assaulted Reigns in recent previous Raw matchups.
In addition to the WWE Superstars, one of the key tenants of WrestleMania is appearances from some of the world’s foremost celebrities. One of the earliest examples of this was former heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali in 1985 at the iconic Madison Square Garden in New York. Ali was a special guest referee for the main event featuring Hulk Hogan and Mr T who defeated Paul Orndorff and Roddy Piper. Since then other celebrities including Mike Tyson, Floyd Mayweather, Snoop Dogg and Kim Kardashian have gone on to make appearances at the illustrious event.
WrestleMania 35 looks set to follow in the footsteps of previous events. The return of ‘The Animal’ Batista, who will square-up against former Evolution mentor and partner Triple H, in a no holds barred match-up will be one of the most anticipated bouts of the event.
In the main event, it’s a three-way battle for supremacy between Charlotte Flair, Becky Lynch and Ronda Rousey. The first women’s main event, which is set to thrill a sold-out MetLife stadium, follows WWE’s first-ever all-women’s pay-per-view event, Evolution, which drew a crowd of millions watching on WWE Networks around the world.
WrestleMania 35 takes place on 7 April 2019, fans can catch all the action live on SuperSport.
