Zikhona Sodlaka proudly walks away with a Naledi theatre award in the category : Best lead performance in a play by a female
The coveted Naledi theatre awards , celebrated it’s 15th year at the Joburg theatre on Monday 20th May.
What is easily recognised as the Premiere Awards Event on the Gauteng Theatre Calendar, celebrates excellence in the Performing Arts discipline. It is therefore an honour for any local performing artist to be recognised at this prestigious event.
Zikhona Sodlaka , no stranger to South African screens and certainly no stranger on South African stages, with a career in the performing arts spanning over 20 years is the proud receipient of the Best Lead performance in a play (female) category at this year’s awards.
Up against multi winning and highly celebrated actresses such as Liezl de Kock and Pamela Nomvete she had this to say : ” I am still trying to get over the moment my name was called up to receive , what must be my most treasured award to date.
I am deeply humbled for the recognition of my work but even more so to have been in a category with industry giants that I look up to , such as Pamela Nomvete. When I learnt I was nominated , that alone was a great honour for me and I did not hesitate to celebrate the nomination, but to win, especially when I least expected to..is indescribable”.
Zikhona has been awarded for her role as Queenie in the play Nongogo which was staged at The Market theatre in the winter of 2018.
Nongogo directed by James Ngcobo, is set in a shebeen outside of Johannesburg in the 1950’s vibrant yet turbulent time in the history of our country. Queenie – Zikhona’s character is of a young woman of strength, determination and courage as she dreams of a better life and has a past that’s riddled with dark secrets. “This was an alluring and yet dynamic character for me to play and what made my experience on Nongogo extra special, is this was my debut on the Market Theatre stage. Performing on stage is an area that I’m am looking to grow in , in my career having been a TV actress for many years.Theatre acting requires a lot of endurance , discipline and focus as once the curtain is raised, the show is on! This Naledi Award has further inspired me to seek more stage theatre opportunities”.
There is certainly more for South African audiences to look forward to from this multi award winning actress.
